The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a high-severity-rated warning regarding “multiple vulnerabilities” in the widely used web browser, Google Chrome. These vulnerabilities could potentially enable a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code and disrupt the normal functioning of a targeted system.
In a vulnerability note published on a Wednesday, CERT-In cautioned that remote attackers could exploit specific vulnerabilities by sending a specially crafted request to the targeted system. The agency strongly recommended that users take prompt action by “applying appropriate updates as mentioned by the vendor.”
Providing technical details, CERT-In specified that the affected software versions include “Google Chrome versions prior to 118.0.5993.70/.71 for Windows” and “Google Chrome versions prior to 118.0.5993.70 for Mac and Linux.”
CERT-In’s website serves as a valuable resource for listing and updating users with vulnerability notes and advisories, aiming to keep them informed about potential security threats and necessary actions.
For context, CERT-In plays a critical role as the national nodal agency in responding to computer security incidents, and promptly addressing and mitigating these incidents as they arise. This warning underscores the importance of maintaining the security of widely used software applications like Google Chrome to protect against potential security breaches and cyberattacks. Users are strongly urged to follow the guidance provided by CERT-In and ensure that their systems are updated to address these vulnerabilities.
