eSankhyiki Data Portal Launched On The Occasion Of Statistics Day
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) launched the eSankhyiki portal today to create a comprehensive data management and sharing system for disseminating official statistics in India.

Accessible at https://esankhyiki.mospi.gov.in, the portal aims to provide timely data to planners, policymakers, researchers, and the general public. The eSankhyiki Portal consists of two sections to facilitate easy access and reuse of data.

The first section, the Data Catalogue, consolidates National Accounts Statistics, Consumer Price Index, Index of Industrial Production, Annual Survey of Industries, Periodic Labour Force Survey, and Household Consumption Expenditure Survey in one location.
The second section covers Macro Indicators, featuring time series data of key macro indicators with options for filtering and visualization. It allows users to download custom datasets and visualizations and provides access through APIs, enhancing data reusability. Currently, this section includes National Accounts Statistics, Consumer Price Index, Index of Industrial Production, and Annual Survey of Industries data from the past 10 years.
Statistics Day
Statistics Day is celebrated in recognition of Professor (late) Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis’s contributions to statistics and economic planning. The main objective of Statistics Day is to raise public awareness, especially among the younger generation, about the role and importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation for national development. The theme for Statistics Day 2024 is “Use of data for decision-making,” highlighting the importance of data-driven decisions.
Arvind Panagariya, Chairman of the 16th Finance Commission, served as the Chief Guest and highlighted Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis’s role in shaping the Indian Statistical System. He emphasized the need for India to continue data-driven policy-making for its development.
Prof. Rajeeva Laxman Karandikar, Chairman of the National Statistical Commission, stressed the need for data accessibility and usability and called for interoperability and database linking through stakeholder coordination.
Saurabh Garg, Secretary of MoSPI, highlighted recent ministry initiatives to reduce survey data time-lag, such as Computer-Aided Personal Interviews (CAPI), new surveys, user engagement exercises, and the eSankhyiki portal.
Luis Felipe Lopez-Calva, Global Director for the World Bank Group’s poverty and equity global practice, presented on the global experience of using data for decision-making, emphasizing data as essential infrastructure for effective policy-making and sharing global practices.
MoSPI released three progress reports on the Sustainable Development Goals – National Indicator Framework (SDGs-NIF) with time series data, accessible on the MoSPI website (www.mospi.gov.in).
