On Sunday China’s defense Minister warned against establishing NATO-like military alliances in the Asia-Pacific saying that they will plunge the region into a ‘whirlpool’ of conflicts.
After US and Chinese military military vessels sailed to each other in the flashpoint Taiwan Strait, Li Shangfu’s commented on the matter. “Attempts to push for NATO-like (alliances) in the Asia-Pacific is a way of kidnapping regional countries and exaggerating conflicts and confrontations,” Li said in a security conference. He further added that such alliances will plunge the Asia-Pacific into a whirlpool of disputes and conflicts.
The Chinese Defense Minister did not take any country’s name but his comments hinted towards US which is, trying to support alliances the region. United States is also a member of AUKUS alliance with Australia and Britain. Apart from this United States is also a member of QUAD with Australia, Japan and India.
In Shangri-La Dialogue security summit, Li said, “Today’s Asia-Pacific needs open and inclusive cooperation, not buddying up into small cliques. We must not forget the severe disasters brought by the two world wars to peoples of all countries, and we must not allow such tragic history to repeat itself.” United State Secretary of Defense called for a meeting with Beijing to prevent any miscalculations between the countries. “The more that we talk, the more that we can avoid the misunderstandings and miscalculations that could lead to crisis or conflict,” Austin said.
