Who Is Colonel Sofiya Qureshi? The Pioneering Officer Behind India’s Operation Sindoor

In a landmark press briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi of the Indian Army, and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh of the Indian Air Force detailed the successful execution of Operation Sindoor- India’s calculated military response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

The operation targeted nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), sending a clear signal of India’s resolve against cross-border terrorism.

Spotlight On Colonel Sofiya Qureshi

Colonel Qureshi, an officer in the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals, has made history as the first woman to lead an Indian Army training contingent at Force 18- a multinational exercise involving ASEAN Plus nations.

She was also the only female commander across all participating countries, exemplifying India’s progress in integrating women into key military roles.

With notable peacekeeping experience, including a 2006 deployment in Congo under the UN mission, Colonel Qureshi also contributed to training in peacekeeping and humanitarian mine action.

Encouraging young women to pursue service in the armed forces, she stated, “If possible, join the Indian Army.”

Military leaders, including Lt Gen Bipin Rawat, have praised her leadership, affirming the Army’s commitment to equality in responsibility and opportunity.

Details Of Operation Sindoor

As per the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Air Force carried out precise strikes on four terror camps within Pakistan and five inside PoK.

These sites belonged to notorious groups including Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.

The Defence Ministry described the operation as ‘focused, measured, and non-escalatory’, clarifying that no Pakistani military installations were hit.

The strikes came in direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 civilians tragically lost their lives.

The government released a video confirming the operation’s success, and reports revealed that swift action caught Pakistani authorities off guard.

A Decisive Message

They named the operation ‘Sindoor’ in homage to the women widowed by the Pahalgam attack, symbolising national unity and sacrifice.

Wing Commander Vyomika Singh detailed the operation’s timings- between 1:05 and 1:30 AM, underscoring the high level of coordination among India’s tri-services forces.

Operation Sindoor stands not only as a testament to India’s military capability but also as a milestone in women’s active participation in strategic defence.
