Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill expressed a mix of relief and cautious optimism following his team’s three-wicket victory via the DLS method over Mumbai Indians in a rain-interrupted IPL 2025 encounter at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Although the win boosts GT’s playoff hopes, Gill insisted that the team remains focused on maintaining consistent performances.
After restricting Mumbai Indians to a modest 155/8, Gujarat appeared in control, reaching 107/2 in 14 overs.
Rain, however, disrupted proceedings and shifted momentum.
On resumption, Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery spell rattled the Titans, removing both Gill and Shahrukh Khan.
Gujarat suddenly found themselves struggling at 132/6 after losing four wickets for just 26 runs when the rain returned.
The game resumed again nearly 30 minutes past the scheduled close, with GT chasing a revised target of 147 in 19 overs.
In a tense finale, Rahul Tewatia struck a crucial four, Gerald Coetzee hit a six, and despite a no-ball and missed run-out opportunity, GT secured victory in dramatic fashion.
Gill admitted that the match had taken an emotional toll. “Thoughts like qualifying for playoffs do creep in,” he said. “But we want to take each game as it comes and give our best every time.”
The skipper emphasised team unity and intent, preferring not to be distracted by points table permutations.
“There was chaos when we returned to bat after the rain. It felt like a Test match early on with the wind and moisture, and we had to adjust quickly. But it’s always good to have a ‘W’ beside your name,” he remarked during the post-match presentation.
Gill acknowledged the difficulty in tracking the DLS targets and adapting to a sluggish pitch.
“The wicket was slow, and with rain around, it wasn’t easy to time shots. We focused on strike rotation and targeting our zones,” he said.
He also shared that the dugout was filled with frustration during the second rain break.
“At one stage, we were so far ahead, and then suddenly it felt like a bad Test session. But the universe gave us a second chance, and it all worked out.”
Highlighting collective effort, Gill praised bowlers and fielders for crucial contributions.
“Sherfane’s efforts, the bowlers’ discipline, and small moments on the field were game-changers,” he said.
He was particularly pleased with Rashid Khan’s performance. “Coming back from injury isn’t easy. But the way he’s worked hard in the nets and bowled today is a great sign for us,” Gill noted.
In a tournament known for close contests, Gill concluded: “Wins like this – emotional and chaotic – are the ones that take you through in a league like the IPL.”
