Indian batting stalwart Virat Kohli etched his name further into cricketing history on Saturday, becoming the second-highest run-getter in One-Day Internationals (ODIs).
Kohli achieved the feat during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
After enduring a quiet start in the series, Kohli showcased his trademark composure and timing, scoring an unbeaten 74. With this knock, he surpassed Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of 14,234 runs in 404 ODIs.
The Indian No 3 reached the milestone in his 293rd innings, underlining his extraordinary consistency across formats.
Kohli now trails only the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs.
While Tendulkar’s record remains monumental, Kohli’s average of 57.69 across 305 matches stands well above Tendulkar’s 44.83, making him statistically the most consistent ODI batter among the top ten run-scorers in history.
At 36, Kohli continues to be a formidable force in the 50-over format.
With limited appearances outside ODIs in recent years, cricket experts believe the Delhi-born star is likely to finish his career as the second-highest run-getter, a fitting tribute to his idol Tendulkar.
Kohli’s innings against Australia was a timely return to form after modest scores in the first two matches. Known as the ‘Chase Master’, he once again delivered under pressure, guiding India to a commanding nine-wicket victory.
His innings included seven elegant fours, displaying the trademark precision and control that have defined his career.
The partnership between Kohli and Rohit Sharma proved decisive, as the duo stitched together an unbeaten 168-run stand for the second wicket.
Rohit, leading from the front, struck his 33rd ODI hundred and 50th international century, reminding fans of his own prolific prowess.
Rohit Sharma was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his stellar performances, scoring 202 runs across three matches.
His leadership and batting form were instrumental in ensuring India ended the series on a positive note despite Australia clinching it 2–1.
With the ODI series concluded, India and Australia are set to face off in a five-match T20I series beginning on October 29.
As both teams shift their focus to the shorter format, fans will eagerly watch whether Kohli continues his golden touch and adds more milestones to an already extraordinary career.
Virat Kohli’s record-breaking feat serves as yet another reminder of his unmatched consistency and enduring brilliance—qualities that continue to inspire a generation of cricketers worldwide.
