PM Modi Reviews Surat Bullet Train Station; Advances India’s High-Speed Rail Ambitions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted an on-site review of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project on Saturday, underscoring India’s push towards next-generation transport infrastructure.

Prime Minister Modi arrived at Surat International Airport. He then flew by helicopter to Antroli. There, he inspected the under-construction Surat Bullet Train Station, a flagship hub of the corridor.

The Surat station, reflecting the city’s globally recognised diamond sector, stands 26.3 metres high and spans a built-up area of 58,352 sq mt across three levels: the ground floor for parking and security, the concourse level for lounges, kiosks and ticketing, and the platform level for boarding. While the structural work is complete, finishing touches and interior amenities are in progress. Track installation, including RC track-bed construction, has also been completed.

Transforming regional connectivity

The 508-km corridor, linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad, traverses Gujarat, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and Maharashtra, connecting major cities including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Vapi, Thane, and Mumbai. The corridor will cut travel time between the two metros to around two hours, dramatically enhancing inter-city mobility.

The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL) is building over 85 per cent of the corridor, approximately 465 km, on elevated viaducts. So far, they have completed 326 km.

Construction teams have built seventeen of the 25 river bridges. They have also completed civil works and track-bed preparation on the 47-km Surat–Bilimora stretch, making it one of the most advanced sections.

The Prime Minister’s visit highlights the government’s commitment to accelerating high-impact infrastructure projects.

The MAHSR corridor, once operational, will transform regional connectivity. It will boost economic development. It will also place India among the nations with advanced high-speed rail networks.
