World champion D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Vaishali R, and Koneru Humpy lead the group of 15 Indian players who have qualified for the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss and Women’s Grand Swiss.
These tournaments will take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 3 to 16 September.
FIDE has designed the Grand Swiss events as key qualifiers for the Candidates Tournaments.
The top two players from each event will book their spots in the 2026 Candidates and Women’s Candidates Tournaments.
FIDE has increased the Open prize fund by 36%, from USD 460,000 to USD 625,000.
The Women’s Grand Swiss will offer USD 230,000, up 64% from its earlier fund of USD 140,000.
Both tournaments will use an 11-round Swiss format. A total of 170 players — 114 in the Grand Swiss and 56 in the Women’s event — will compete from around the world.
So far, 100 players have qualified for the Grand Swiss and 44 for the Women’s event based on ratings. Only players who played 30 or more rated games could qualify.
FIDE has added six new spots to the Women’s Grand Swiss this year. The top four players from the June 2025 FIDE Standard Rating List will claim four of these.
Organisers will award two wild cards for the remaining spots. The final list will include nominees from FIDE’s president, organisers, and continental federations.
