No Plans To Issue ₹50 Coin, Centre Tells Delhi High Court

The Ministry of Finance submitted an affidavit during the hearing of a PIL demanding the issuance of such a coin, especially for the benefit of visually impaired persons.

The Central Government on Wednesday informed the Delhi High Court that it has no intention to issue a ₹50 coin. The Ministry of Finance submitted an affidavit during the hearing of a PIL demanding the issuance of such a coin, especially for the benefit of visually impaired persons.

The Ministry said a 2022 survey by the Reserve Bank of India revealed that the general public prefers currency notes over coins of ₹10 and ₹20. At present, coins of ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10, and ₹20 are in circulation, but no ₹50 coin exists.

The government lawyer stated that several factors must be considered before introducing a new coin. These include public acceptance and the coin’s practicality in daily use. The affidavit also mentioned public concerns raised in the survey regarding the size and weight of higher-denomination coins.

The Finance Ministry added that in the new currency series, each denomination note has a distinct size. This helps visually impaired individuals identify them by touch, improving accessibility.

The PIL petitioner argued that the current ₹50 note lacks clear distinction from other denominations. He claimed to have studied design flaws in Indian currency and highlighted the difficulty visually impaired individuals face in identifying the ₹50 note.

The government assured the court that as older note series are phased out, it will become easier for the visually impaired to identify the newer series by touch. The case continues in the Delhi High Court.
