Chief Justice DY Chandrachud’s Farewell: Tributes And Reflections On Distinguished Tenure

Today marks the last day of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud’s tenure. His farewell ceremony saw a flood of tributes from colleagues and lawyers. Attorney General R Venkataramani humorously recalled a conference in Brazil where participants danced to close the event. He suggested that a similar farewell dance would be in order for the retiring CJI.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta commended CJI Chandrachud for his unwavering fairness in delivering justice. Mehta shared that the government never hesitated to present its case before the CJI, despite occasional losses. He described the CJI as a strong leader, a “karta of the family,” whose absence will be deeply felt.

Supreme Court Bar Association President Kapil Sibal also praised the retiring CJI. He referred to him as the “extraordinary son of an extraordinary father” and highlighted his calm and balanced approach. Sibal pointed out that while his father had managed court turmoil, CJI Chandrachud skillfully guided the court through challenging cases.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a senior advocate, spoke of CJI Chandrachud’s increasing energy over the past 42 years. He acknowledged the CJI’s remarkable patience and his efforts to modernize the court. Singhvi also noted the technological advances brought into the courtroom, including the use of iPads.

Mukul Rohatgi shared fond memories from when he worked alongside CJI Chandrachud as Assistant Solicitor General. He hoped for future lunch meetings with the CJI, reminiscing about their shared moments in Mumbai.
