Prashant Bhushan, representing the Kuki Organization for Human Rights Trust, told the Supreme Court about an audio tape that allegedly features Manipur’s Chief Minister admitting to instigating violence. Bhushan claimed the CM allowed looting of weapons and protected those involved in the violence. The Court agreed to investigate the tape’s authenticity and asked Bhushan to submit it in a sealed envelope.
Court Orders Forensic Investigation of Audio Tape
The Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, directed Bhushan to present the tape for forensic analysis. Bhushan revealed that the tape had been handed over to the Justice Lamba Commission, which has yet to act on it after four months. He also stated that the source of the tape must remain confidential due to threats to his life.
Solicitor General Objects to Petition
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta opposed Bhushan’s claims. He argued that Bhushan should first approach the High Court. Chief Justice Chandrachud responded firmly, saying, “We do not appreciate any attempt to suppress things. We are well aware of the situation in Manipur.” Bhushan argued that the Supreme Court should hear the petition since it has already formed a committee to address the Manipur violence.
The Supreme Court’s decision to investigate the audio highlights the ongoing legal efforts to uncover the truth behind the alleged instigation of violence by the Chief Minister.
