Justice Chandrachud described judges as dedicated servants of justice. He praised the great judges who had served before him. He also expressed confidence in his successor, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, calling him a capable leader. “If I have ever hurt anyone in the court, please forgive me,” he said, quoting “Michhami Dukkadam,” which means, “May all my misdeeds be forgiven.”

Justice Chandrachud’s tenure saw several landmark rulings. He presided over the Constitution Bench upholding the revocation of Article 370, pushing for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. He also led the decision to dismantle the electoral bonds scheme, aiming for greater transparency in political financing. Although he did not alter the Special Marriage Act to recognize same-sex marriages, he emphasized the right of the LGBTQ+ community to dignity.
Justice Chandrachud also supported reforms within the Supreme Court. He helped establish Mitti Cafe, a facility for people with disabilities, and a dedicated bar room for women lawyers.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna’s Tribute
Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the incoming Chief Justice, praised his predecessor’s work.
