Syed Sadatullah Husaini, President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Minority Status of AMU. The Court overruled the 1967 judgment in S. Azeez Basha vs. Union of India, which had denied minority status to institutions created by statute. Consequently, this ruling preserves the minority character of many institutions, safeguarding their educational and cultural rights.
The Supreme Court’s judgment is a landmark decision for minority institutions in India. By overturning the previous ruling, the Court has protected the rights of religious, linguistic, and cultural minorities in the country. Moreover, the Constitution Bench has now referred the matter to a regular bench to examine who established the university and who was behind its creation. As a result, JIH remains confident that the Minority Status of AMU will be upheld.
Syed Sadatullah Husaini emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of Muslims and other minorities. He stated, “Muslims in India contribute positively to the nation. Their educational institutions serve students without discrimination.” Furthermore, he urged the government to adopt a more inclusive approach, ensuring that minorities are part of the development agenda.
Husaini called for proactive government measures to protect minority rights. He suggested that the government should ensure institutions like AMU are safeguarded, and that affirmative actions and benefits should be provided to improve the socio-economic status of minorities. “Such measures are a sign of any democratic country,” he said, highlighting the need for better government sensitivity towards minority issues.
