Young Farmer Died After Clash With Haryana Police At Khanauri Border

In a rather saddening development on Farmers Protest 2.0, a 24-year-old farmer died after sustaining injuries in a clash with the Haryana Police on the Khanauri border. The young protestor, Shubh Karan Singh was taken to the hospital after looking at his condition. But the hospital announced that he died.

This incident took place after the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march of the farmers that started on February 13th turned into a heated clash on the Haryana borders as farmers were not allowed to enter Delhi from Punjab.

Haryana police informs public of no casualty

In the afternoon, on the same day, the Haryana police made an announcement through its social media handle that as per the authorities’ information, “no farmer has died”. The translation of the X post, which is originally in hindi reads, “According to the information received so far, no farmer has died today #किसानआंदोलन (Farmers protest). This is just a rumour. There is information about two policemen and one protestor being injured at Data Singh-Khanori border who is undergoing treatment.”

Following numerous rounds of unsuccessful negotiations with the central leaders, the farmers chose to breach the barriers erected by the Haryana Police, which resulted in a tense scenario at both the Khanauri and Shambhu borders on Wednesday. The Haryana police fired tear gas rounds at the demonstrators in an attempt to disperse them.

Negotiations with farmers

During the final round of negotiations on February 18, a group of three Union ministers suggested that government bodies buy pulses, maize, and cotton crops at MSP for a period of five years following the signing of a contract with farmers. It was rejected by the farmers.

Sukhpal Singh Khaira, a Congress MLA, blamed the farmer’s killing on the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government and claimed the chief minister had turned a blind eye to the “blatant intrusion by the Haryana police into Punjab territory.”
