ISRO has accomplished a major milestone in the human rating of its CE20 cryogenic engine.
With the conclusion of the last round of ground qualification testing, ISRO has reached a significant milestone in the human rating of its CE20 cryogenic engine, which drives the cryogenic stage of the human-rated LVM3 launch vehicle for Gaganyaan human spaceflight missions.
“ISRO’s CE20 cryogenic engine is now human-rated for Gaganyaan missions,” the space agency said on ‘X” on Wednesday.

It stated that rigorous testing proves the engine’s resilience and that acceptance testing was also performed on the CE20 engine, which was selected for the first unmanned flight, LVM3 G1.
According to the statement, the last test conducted on February 13 was the seventh in a series of vacuum ignition experiments conducted to simulate flight circumstances at the High Altitude Test Facility at ISRO Propulsion Complex, Mahendragiri.

Gaganyaan clearing off all the tests
According to the statement, the life demonstration tests, endurance tests, and performance evaluation under nominal operating settings as well as off-nominal conditions with regard to thrust, mixture ratio, and propellant tank pressure were all part of the ground qualification testing for the human rating of the CE20 engine.
According to ISRO, all of the CE20 engine’s ground qualification tests for the Gaganyaan project have been successfully finished.
Power of ISRO engine
Four engines have completed 39 hot fire tests under various operating conditions for a combined period of 8,810 seconds against the minimum human rating qualification standard requirement of 6,350 seconds, according to ISRO, in order to certify the CE20 engine for human rating criteria.
Additionally, ISRO has effectively finished the flight engine acceptance tests for the first unmanned Gaganyaan (G1) mission, which is tentatively planned for the second quarter of 2024.
It was reported that this engine, which has a specific impulse of 442.5 seconds and a thrust capability of 19 to 22 tonnes, will power the upper stage of the human-rated LVM3 vehicle.
