New Delhi: According to a study report by the Union Ministry Of Education pass percentage of students has varied largely from board to board. The percentage of students passed from Kerala is 99.85 whereas in Meghalaya it was 57%.
In assessment of class 10 and 12 exam results the performance of students has varied from one board to another, the challenges identified by the ministry are lack of equal opportunity for students across different boards and barriers created by different syllabi for the national level entrance test.
As per the reports, around 35 lakh students of Class 10 are not reaching Class 11 in which 27.5 lakh students failed and 7.5 lakh student did not appear for the exam. The assessment has also pointed out that the top five boards (UP, CBSE, Maharashtra, Bihar and West Bengal) cover about 50% of students and the rest are enrolled in 55 boards across the country.
The report mentioned that 11 states- UP, Bihar, MP, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Assam, Bengal, Haryana, and Chhattisgarh handout to 85% of dropout.
According to Sanjay Kumar, the secretary said, “The difference between pass percentages of various states has led the education ministry to now look at standardizing the assessment pattern for all 60 school boards across various states in the country. The other reason behind the standardization attempt is to contain the dropouts at the level of Class 10.”
The report recommended the boards to converge the syllabus of science with Central Board so that the students get an equal opportunity to prepare for common exams like JEE and NEET. The study also mentioned that the performance of exam results swinging wildly from board to board may be due different pattern and approach followed by boards and convergence of secondary and higher secondary board into a single board can help students.
