Tis Hazari Court Sentences Woman To Life Imprisonment For Killing Her Two Daughters

The court imposed a fine of ₹10,000 along with the life sentence, considering that the mitigating circumstances outweighed the aggravating factors in this case

Life Imprisonment

The Tis Hazari court has sentenced a woman, Lilavati (32), to life imprisonment for the 2018 murder of her two minor daughters. The court described the crime as one of the rarest and most brutal, noting that it shook the conscience of the court. The prosecution revealed that Lilavati strangled her daughters, aged five years and five months, on February 20, 2018.

Court Considers Rehabilitation

While sentencing, Additional Sessions Judge Sachin Jain stated that life imprisonment is more appropriate than the death penalty. The judge highlighted the possibility of Lilavati’s rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The court took into account the well-being of Lilavati’s two surviving children—a seven-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son—emphasizing that removing their mother entirely from their lives could have a severe impact on their upbringing.

Mitigating Factors Influenced Sentence

In its order, the court recognized the societal idealization of motherhood and the shock caused by Lilavati’s actions. However, the judge noted that the convict’s young age and the potential for her rehabilitation were significant factors. The court imposed a fine of ₹10,000 along with the life sentence, considering that the mitigating circumstances outweighed the aggravating factors in this case.
