Indian Railways plans to introduce ’tilting trains’ by 2025–26 to maintain higher speeds on curvy stretches.
These trains have a mechanism that enables higher speed on regular broad-gauge tracks, which tilt while undergoing a curve on the track. The technology will be equipped with around 100 Vande Bharat trains by 2024, with sleeper coaches operational by the first quarter of 2024.
The Indian Railways has explored various options regarding such trains but has never finalized any details. It has also had discussions with Spanish manufacturer Talgo and the Swiss government.
The latest version of indigenous trains with sleeper coaches will be operational by the first quarter of 2024. The trains are currently active in 11 countries, including the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Finland, Russia, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, China, Germany, and Romania.
The railway is also preparing to become a major exporter of Vande Bharat trains by 2026, primarily to markets in Europe, South America, and East Asia.
The ecosystem to export trains will be created over the next two to three years, with the aim of manufacturing 475 Vande Bharat trains in the next three years.
