Tension escalated in Krishnanagar, West Bengal, on Wednesday after a woman’s half-charred and semi-clad body was discovered near the office of the Superintendent of Police.
Locals who found the body reported that the victim’s face was severely charred. They promptly informed the police about the body.
A local resident suggested that the victim may have been sexually assaulted before her body was set ablaze. “In all probability, the victim was first assaulted, and her body was charred,” he told reporters.
A large police contingent quickly arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination. “It appears that the victim is in her early twenties. The exact cause of death will be determined after the autopsy report is available, which will also indicate whether this was a case of assault and murder. Our primary focus now is to identify the victim,” stated a police official from Nadia district.
Meanwhile, the incident has heightened tensions in the area. Many locals claim that the recovery of the body from such a close proximity to the SP’s office highlights “lackadaisical” security measures in the region.
