Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal has written a letter to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal, urging him to appoint a Dalit MLA as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly.
Meanwhile, this demand comes at a critical time as discussions continue about forming the opposition leadership after AAP’s election defeat in Delhi.
Unfulfilled Promise From Punjab Elections
In her letter, Maliwal reminded Kejriwal of his 2022 Punjab election promise to appoint a Dalit Deputy Chief Minister.
Moreover, she argued that appointing a Dalit LoP in Delhi would present an opportunity to honour that commitment while reinforcing AAP’s values of equality and justice.
AAP’s Declining Influence In Delhi
- The BJP won 48 out of 70 seats in the recent Delhi Assembly elections.
- AAP, which governed Delhi for 10 years, was reduced to 22 seats.
- The Congress failed to win any seat for the third consecutive time.
Maliwal’s Strong Message To Kejriwal
Maliwal emphasized that AAP must demonstrate its commitment to inclusive politics, urging Kejriwal to prove that the party’s values extend beyond mere rhetoric.
She stated, “I urge you to stand by your promise this time and show that you do not just talk about equality, but actually implement it.”
In doing so, Maliwal stressed that the appointment of a Dalit MLA as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) would be a powerful symbol of AAP’s dedication to social justice.
Her call highlighted the importance of not only making promises but also following through on them to ensure meaningful representation for marginalized communities in positions of leadership.
Political Developments In Delhi
With the swearing-in ceremony for Delhi’s new Chief Minister and cabinet set to take place at Ramlila Maidan on Thursday, Maliwal’s letter puts additional pressure on Kejriwal to demonstrate political accountability amid AAP’s declining influence.
Swati Maliwal’s demand highlights a growing debate on representation and inclusivity in Indian politics.
In addition, it underscores the ongoing conversation about the importance of equitable leadership roles for marginalized communities.
