Supreme Court ordered on Monday that the committee headed by Justice (ret.) Gita Mittal submitted three reports regarding the violence in Manipur. In order to help with the case, the court has asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to review the report. This occurs just days after the SC appointed three former judges to form a committee to investigate relief and remedial measures, compensation, and rehabilitation in Manipur, which has been plagued by ethnic violence for the past three months.
The panel reportedly informed the top court that the victims of the tragedy in Manipur needed their important documents to be granted again.
In the interim, the court has declared that it would issue directives on August 25 for the proper functioning of former judges’ committee. It stated that specific procedural instructions would need to be provided in order to provide administrative assistance, cover the committee’s financial expenses, etc., according to ANI.
Three reports submitted by the Committee must be given to the solicitors of the case, the top court said.
The committee consists of former high court judges- Justice Asha Menon is a former Delhi High Court Judge, Justice Shalini Joshi is a judge at Bombay High Court and Justice Gita Mittal was the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
The investigation should be supervised by six DIG Rank officials from outside the state, according to a recommendation from the bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud.
Apex Court said, “We are proposing to direct that there shall be five officers of rank at least DySP who will be brought into CBI from various states…to oversee the investigation into these FIRs. These officers will also function within four corners of administrative set up of the CBI and will be supervised by the joint director of CBI.”
