PM Modi To Attend BRICS Summit In South Africa; Followed By Greece

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to embark on a four-day journey, beginning Tuesday, to South Africa and Greece. During his three-day stay in Johannesburg, he will partake in the 15th BRICS Summit, responding to an invitation extended by South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa.

The summit, slated from August 22 to August 24, marks a significant event as the first in-person BRICS summit since 2019. The BRICS coalition comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The forthcoming summit, as conveyed by the external affairs ministry, offers an occasion to evaluate the progress of the initiatives introduced by the group and to identify prospective areas of engagement.

Prime Minister Modi will also be actively involved in the BRICS – Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue events, taking place subsequent to the BRICS leadership summit. These engagements include the participation of nations invited by South Africa, further strengthening the discourse on international cooperation.

Throughout the visit, Prime Minister Modi anticipates conducting bilateral discussions with key regional and global leaders present in Johannesburg.

Notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping will also grace the BRICS Summit in person, along with embarking on a state visit. This visit follows Xi Jinping’s earlier international excursion to Russia earlier this year.

However, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s absence from the Johannesburg event is attributed to the International Criminal Court issuing an arrest warrant for his alleged involvement in the deportation of Ukrainian children.

Subsequently, Prime Minister Modi will be visiting Greece on August 25, in response to an invitation from Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. This visit holds particular significance, marking the first time in four decades an Indian Prime Minister embarks on an official journey to Athens. Discussions between the two leaders will center on avenues to further enhance their bilateral relationship.

Additionally, PM Modi will engage with business leaders from both nations and connect with the Indian community in Greece.

The external affairs ministry underlined the historic and deep-rooted connections between India and Greece, emphasizing their burgeoning collaborations in maritime transport, defense, trade, investments, and people-to-people interactions in a press release.
