The parents of a junior doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in August have written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking a meeting to discuss the progress of the investigation and request his support.
The grieving family expressed their frustration over the slow pace of the inquiry and the emotional toll it has taken on them.
In an email sent on Tuesday, the victim’s father conveyed the family’s sense of helplessness following the horrific crime.
The letter stated, “After the heinous, unforeseen incident happened to our daughter, we have been going through tremendous mental pressure and feeling helpless now.”
The parents requested an appointment with Home Minister Shah, hoping to discuss the case in person.
His visit to Kolkata, originally scheduled for 24 October in connection with the upcoming Assembly bypolls, has postponed.
Meanwhile, a BJP state committee member in West Bengal clarified that the leader’s tour to the state have only postponed, not canceled. He emphasized that if the visit had proceeded as planned, they would have arranged a meeting between the leader and the victim’s parents.
The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage, leading junior doctors at the hospital to launch a hunger strike, demanding greater security and accountability.
However, the victim’s parents asked the doctors to withdraw from the protest on Monday night, hoping to focus on the investigation, leading to the protest’s cancellation.
Case Background
Authorities discovered the body of the 26-year-old junior doctor inside a seminar hall at the medical college on 9 August.
The Kolkata Police initially arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, in connection with the case.
Subsequently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe following a court directive.
During the CBI’s investigation, investigators made further arrests, including Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the college, and Abhijit Mondal, the ex-officer in charge of Tala Police Station.
Additionally, they have accused both of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence related to the case.
Despite the additional arrests, the CBI’s first charge sheet, filed earlier this month, identified Sanjay Roy as the primary accused in the rape and murder.
The victim’s family, however, continues to seek justice, calling for a thorough and expedited investigation.
The case has drawn national attention, with many calling for greater protection for medical professionals and accountability in handling sensitive criminal investigations.
As the family awaits a response from the Home Ministry, their request for action remains a poignant reminder of the long road ahead in their pursuit of justice.
