RG Kar: Accused Claims Spark Governor’s Intervention In Junior Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case

In the alleged rape and murder case of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has formally requested an urgent report from the state government following allegations made by the primary accused, Sanjay Roy.

Roy claims that senior police officials, including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, conspired to wrongfully implicate him in the case.

In an official statement issued by Raj Bhavan on Monday, Governor Bose’s office confirmed that the Governor has sought a detailed report from the government, as well as from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, to clarify the state’s position on these serious allegations.

The statement stated, “In the light of disturbing news carried by the media on 12.11.2024 in connection with the RG Kar alleged rape and murder case, where the key accused Sanjay Roy, after the proceedings in the Sealdah Court on 11.11.2024, has reportedly alleged that he was framed by senior police officers, including former Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal, HG (Honourable Governor) has urged the State Government to look into the matter and inform him the factual position and the State Government’s stand on the allegations at the earliest.”

Accused Sanjay Roy Claims Former Commissioner Orchestrated Conspiracy

The accusations emerged on 11 November, when Sanjay Roy, being led from the Sealdah Court after the first day of his trial, told reporters that former Commissioner Goyal had orchestrated a plan to frame him in the case.

“Vineet Goyal is behind all the conspiracy to frame me falsely in this case. The Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Department also involved in the conspiracy. Our government also backed them. Not allowed to speak so far. But today I am taking the names,” Roy said.

Police Enact Media Restrictions

Following Roy’s public statements on 11 November, Kolkata Police reportedly began taking steps to limit his media access.

On Tuesday, police arranged for a special vehicle with tinted windows to transport Roy, replacing the usual prison van, thus preventing any direct interaction with journalists.

This action appears intended to prevent further statements from Roy outside of the courtroom.
