The Railway Board has approved the launch of a Joint Parcel Product Rapid Cargo train from central Kashmir’s Budgam to Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar, marking the first dedicated cargo service from the Union Territory.
Operated daily by the Jammu Division of Northern Railways, the service aims to accelerate the movement of Kashmir’s renowned products to markets across India and abroad.
Announcing the decision on Wednesday, Senior Commerce Divisional Manager (Jammu Division) Uchit Singhal said the initiative would provide a major boost to local traders.
“The main objective is to benefit the traders of J&K and to deliver Kashmiri goods, apples, saffron, dry fruits, walnuts, pashmina shawls, carpets, and handicrafts, to every corner of the country and encourage their marketing internationally,” he said.
The train will complete its journey to Adarsh Nagar in approximately 23 hours, ensuring faster and more reliable transport compared to road networks.
Operational details of the service
The cargo train will include a seating-cum-luggage rake with eight parcel vans, offering sufficient capacity for a variety of goods. Facilities for loading and unloading will be available at Bari Brahmana station to streamline logistics.
“This cargo train will initially run on a pilot basis for one year,” Singhal said, adding that J&K Police will provide security arrangements to ensure safe operations.
He further noted that the reduced registration fee would make this rail option more economical than road travel.
Officials said the new service reflects the central government’s emphasis on improving connectivity and trade opportunities for Jammu and Kashmir.
By providing an efficient and cost-effective logistics solution, the cargo train is expected to strengthen supply chains and boost the export potential of the region’s indigenous products.
Traders believe the move could open new markets for traditional Kashmiri goods, especially in metropolitan areas, while paving the way for international promotion of the Union Territory’s unique handicrafts and agro-products.
