On World Lion Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi renewed his government’s pledge to safeguard the Asiatic lion, celebrating their conservation successes and encouraging global awareness.
In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Modi commended the efforts of those dedicated to lion conservation. “On World Lion Day, I compliment all those working on lion conservation and reiterate our commitment to protecting these majestic big cats. India, as we all know, is home to a large lion population in Gir, Gujarat. Over the years, their numbers have increased significantly, which is great news,” Modi wrote.

The Prime Minister called on wildlife enthusiasts to visit Gir National Park in Gujarat, the primary habitat of the Asiatic lion. “I also invite all wildlife lovers to Gir to discover the majestic Asiatic Lion. It will give everyone the opportunity to witness the efforts to protect the lion and experience the hospitality of the people of Gujarat,” he added.
Modi has been an active proponent of big cat conservation. Earlier this year, in February, the Union Cabinet approved the creation of the International Big Cat Alliance. This initiative aims to unite nations where big cats reside, promoting a holistic approach to conservation, sustainable development, and community support. The alliance has garnered positive global attention and support.
The Prime Minister’s remarks underscore the ongoing commitment to the protection and preservation of these iconic animals, highlighting both national and international efforts to ensure their continued survival.
