Prime Minister Modi Chairs Meeting to Assess Heat Wave Preparedness

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a comprehensive review meeting on Thursday to assess the country’s readiness for the forthcoming heat wave season.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a comprehensive review meeting on Thursday to assess the country’s readiness for the forthcoming heat wave season. The meeting focused on analyzing the temperature projections for the period from April to June 2024, highlighting expectations of above-normal maximum temperatures across most regions, particularly in Central India and the western peninsular.

The discussion also delved into the preparedness of the healthcare sector, emphasizing the availability of essential medicines, intravenous fluids, ice packs, Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), and potable water to combat potential health challenges during the impending hot weather.

Recognizing the importance of timely dissemination of information, especially in regional languages, Prime Minister Modi underscored the necessity of spreading awareness through diverse platforms such as television, radio, and social media. With 2024 anticipated to witness a hotter-than-usual summer, coinciding with the General Elections, the need to translate and widely disseminate advisories issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in regional languages was emphasized.

Prime Minister Modi advocated for a coordinated approach across all levels of governance, stressing the imperative for collaboration among Central, State, and District administrations, as well as various Ministries. Emphasis was also placed on enhancing public awareness and ensuring adequate hospital preparedness, alongside swift detection and containment of forest fires.

Attended by the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, the Home Secretary, officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the meeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to proactive measures in mitigating the potential impacts of heat waves and ensuring public safety and well-being.
