Sarabjit Singh, the son of one of the assassins of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, declared his candidacy for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Punjab’s Faridkot constituency on Thursday. The 45-year-old Singh, a resident of Mohali and a 12th-class dropout, announced his decision to run as an independent candidate, citing encouragement from numerous residents of Faridkot.
Singh’s father, Beant Singh, was involved in the assassination of Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, alongside Satwant Singh, while serving as her bodyguards. Beant was killed on the spot by security guards, while Satwant was later sentenced to death and executed.
Although Sarabjit Singh had previously contested elections, including the 2004 Lok Sabha polls from Bathinda and the 2014 LS polls from Fatehgarh Sahib, he faced defeat in both instances. His political career also included an unsuccessful bid in the 2007 Punjab assembly polls from Barnala’s Bhadaur seat.

In the upcoming election, Singh aims to challenge the incumbent Congress MP Mohammad Sadique for the Faridkot seat. The constituency, among 13 others in Punjab, is scheduled to vote on June 1, with the counting of votes set for June 4.
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated actor Karamjit Anmol, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded singer Hans Raj Hans as their respective candidates for the Faridkot seat.
