Polluted Drain From Haryana Blamed For Fish Deaths In Yamuna, DPCC Tells NGT

Yamuna

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) reported to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that a heavily polluted drain from Haryana, which flows into the Yamuna river, caused the death of hundreds of fish near Burari. The DPCC submitted its findings after conducting inspections and collecting water samples on August 29.

Drain Pollution Worsens Yamuna Water Quality

The NGT had earlier taken suo motu cognizance of a media report on fish deaths in the Yamuna in July. Following this, it directed the DPCC to investigate and report back. The DPCC’s report confirms that Drain No. 8, originating in Haryana, significantly worsens the river’s water quality when it merges with the Yamuna, particularly before the monsoon season. Tests on water samples taken from various points showed high pollution levels in the drain, which contaminated the Yamuna and led to fish deaths.

Haryana Agencies Urged to Take Action

In its report, the DPCC urged the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) and the state’s urban development authority to act promptly to reduce pollution in Drain No. 8. It emphasized that controlling pollution from this drain is necessary to prevent further fish deaths in the Yamuna. The DPCC has sent letters to the HSPCB and relevant authorities, calling for immediate measures to address the contamination and protect the river’s ecosystem.
