India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Friday described PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Trinidad and Tobago as ‘historic’, noting that it marked a renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.
Delivering his remarks in both Hindi and Bhojpuri, Jaiswal directly connected with the Indian-origin community in the Caribbean nation, underlining the cultural and emotional depth of the relationship.
PM Modi receives a warm welcome from the Trinidadian leadership
Jaiswal announced that Prime Minister Modi arrived in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, earlier on Friday.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her Cabinet members welcomed him at the airport with full honours.
“This visit is historic from India’s perspective, as it is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Trinidad and Tobago in 26 years,” Jaiswal stated. “It reflects a renewed and strong commitment to enhance our bilateral engagement.”
Indian Diaspora plays a vital role in ties
Underscoring the strength of people-to-people connections, Jaiswal said, “Out of Trinidad and Tobago’s total population of 1.3 million, about 45% are of Indian origin. That’s why our relationship with this country is deep and unbreakable.”
He added that a majority of the Indian diaspora in the country traces their ancestry to the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
“They come from Bhojpuri-speaking regions such as Chapra, Arrah, Ballia, Siwan, Gopalganj, Varanasi, Azamgarh, and other areas,” Jaiswal shared.
Cultural roots strengthen diplomatic relations
By speaking in Bhojpuri, Jaiswal not only honoured the cultural heritage of the diaspora but also demonstrated India’s emotional connection with the community.
“Despite the geographical distance, our ties remain strong because of shared history, culture, and language,” he said.
The visit is expected to include bilateral talks, cultural engagements, and interactions with the Indian diaspora, further reinforcing India’s commitment to deepen relations with the Caribbean nation.
