Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday inaugurated the Bengaluru campus of Adichunchanagiri University and BGS Medical College and Hospital, developed by Sri Adichunchanagiri Mahasamsthana Math.
Held at the BGS MCH Campus in Nagarur on Bengaluru’s outskirts, the ceremony witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including Union Ministers V Somanna and HD Kumaraswamy, and Karnataka Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka.
Lighting the ceremonial lamp in the presence of Swami Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji, the pontiff of the Math, HM Shah praised the institution’s commitment to inclusive education and healthcare.

He noted that the Rs 200 crore project, spread across 17 acres, features a 1,000-bed hospital and facilities to accommodate 4,000 students.
The hospital provides affordable and free treatment, while the educational wing offers low-cost medical education.
PM Modi’s healthcare vision praised
Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s early views on healthcare, HM Shah stated, “Two decades ago in Gujarat, Modiji said poverty often stems from illness caused by expensive treatment. Today, he has delivered on his promise.”
HM Shah highlighted that under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, 60 crore poor citizens receive medical care worth up to ₹5 lakh annually.
He also pointed out the government’s holistic approach to public health, building 12 lakh toilets, launching Fit India and International Yoga Day, initiating Poshan Abhiyan and Mission Indradhanush, and expanding access to generic medicines at 15,000 outlets.
“From pregnancy to adulthood, Modi ji has ensured preventive care and affordable treatment at every stage,” HM Shah affirmed.
HM Shah emphasised the government’s push to increase medical education opportunities.
“We’ve gone from 387 to 780 medical colleges, increased MBBS seats from 51,000 to 1.80 lakh, and raised postgraduate medical seats from 31,000 to 74,000. This produces over 1.18 lakh MBBS and 74,000 postgraduate doctors annually.”
Karnataka’s healthcare progress recognised
Union Minister Kumaraswamy expressed gratitude for Amit Shah’s leadership and guidance in tackling ministerial challenges.
Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil added that Karnataka leads in medical education with 70 colleges, including 24 government institutions.
He stressed the need to expand capacity further, noting that 24 lakh students sit for NEET each year, competing for only one lakh seats.
“Our doctors are in global demand. We must set up more colleges, super-speciality hospitals, and cancer centres in every district,” he said.
Swami Paramatmananda Saraswatiji of Arsha Vidya Mandir and Madara Channaiah Swamiji of Chitradurga also graced the occasion.
