PM Modi Meet Qatar's PM @MBA_AlThani_
Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his two-day visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) before arriving in Qatar late on February 13 for an official visit. This marks Modi’s second visit to Qatar, the first being in June 2016. The timing of this visit is particularly significant, following the recent release of eight ex-Indian Navy personnel who had been sentenced to death on espionage charges by Qatar in November 2023. Following an appeal by New Delhi, the charges were dropped, and the personnel returned to India on February 12.
Upon his arrival in the Qatari capital, Doha, Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora and later engaged in discussions with his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. Taking to his social media handle, Modi described the meeting as “wonderful” and highlighted discussions aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations.

Earlier, the External Affairs Ministry reported that Modi had “fruitful” talks with the Prime Minister of Qatar. “PM @narendramodi held a fruitful meeting with HH @MBA_AlThani_, PM & FM of Qatar in Doha. Discussions covered expanding bilateral cooperation in sectors such as trade & investment, energy, finance among others,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on social media.
Upon his arrival, Modi was welcomed by Soltan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, at the airport.
Expressing anticipation for a productive visit aimed at deepening bilateral ties, Modi shared his thoughts on social media: “Landed in Doha. Looking forward to a fruitful Qatar visit which will deepen India-Qatar friendship.”
He also expressed gratitude towards the Indian diaspora in Doha for their warm reception. “An exceptional welcome in Doha! Grateful to the Indian diaspora,” he shared on social media alongside pictures of the enthusiastic reception.

Modi’s arrival in Doha comes after a successful two-day trip to the UAE, during which he addressed a large gathering of Indian diaspora, participated in the prestigious World Governments Summit, and inaugurated the UAE’s first Hindu stone temple.
The announcement of Modi’s visit to Qatar came shortly after the return of seven out of the eight jailed former Indian Navy personnel. These individuals had initially been sentenced to death by a Qatari court but had their sentences commuted to jail terms ranging from three to 25 years. Qatar ultimately released all eight Indians.
While the specifics of the charges against the former Indian Navy personnel were not disclosed by either the Qatari authorities or the Indian government, their release marks a significant development in bilateral relations between India and Qatar.
