Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid heartfelt tributes to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, on his death anniversary.
Remembering him as a visionary nationalist, PM Modi praised his ‘incomparable courage’ and ‘invaluable contribution’ to preserving the integrity of India.
Mookerjee, a towering figure in India’s early post-independence politics, played a central role in challenging Article 370 and championed the full integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the Indian Union.
He died in custody on 23 June 1953, following his arrest for entering Jammu and Kashmir without a permit, protesting the state’s special status.
Taking to social media, the Prime Minister wrote, “Tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his martyrdom day. He displayed incomparable courage and effort to keep the integrity of the country intact. His invaluable contribution to nation-building will always be remembered with reverence.”
