
Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL) has achieved a major milestone in India’s transition to sustainable energy by commissioning the country’s first off-grid 5 MW green hydrogen pilot plant in Kutch, Gujarat.
Officially announced on Monday, the project is powered entirely by solar energy and operates independently of the national grid through an integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
The cutting-edge plant features a fully automated, closed-loop electrolyser system capable of dynamically adapting to real-time solar energy input.
This innovation enables greater operational flexibility while ensuring the system remains efficient, safe, and resilient in the face of renewable energy variability.
A paradigm shift in hydrogen production
According to a company statement, this development signifies a new model for decentralised, renewable-powered hydrogen generation in India.
The plant is not only a technical demonstration but also a strategic move towards realising India’s ambition of becoming a global hub for green hydrogen production.
ANIL will use the project as a prototype for its larger-scale Green Hydrogen Hub in Mundra, Gujarat.
The upcoming hub will significantly advance India’s long-term low-carbon goals and directly support hard-to-abate sectors such as fertiliser production, refining, and heavy transport.
The pilot project aligns closely with the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) — a flagship initiative launched by the Government of India in 2023 with an initial investment of $2.4 billion.
The mission seeks to reduce India’s dependency on imported fuels, promote energy self-sufficiency, and accelerate decarbonisation across key industrial sectors.
India has targeted energy independence by 2047 and net-zero emissions by 2070, placing green hydrogen at the centre of its strategy.
ANIL reflects this national vision by demonstrating how renewable energy can directly power hydrogen production, even in off-grid environments.
A step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat
By embracing decentralised energy systems and green hydrogen innovation, Adani’s initiative strengthens the nation’s drive towards Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
The project also reinforces India’s credentials as a future exporter of green hydrogen, with plans to meet domestic demand while capturing a significant share of the global market by 2030.
This pilot plant not only underlines the Adani Group’s leadership in sustainable energy but also provides a replicable model for renewable-powered industrial applications, potentially transforming India’s energy landscape in the years to come.
