Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the National Conference on Strengthening Legal Aid Delivery Mechanisms at the Supreme Court of India on Saturday at 5 PM.
The event aims to enhance access to justice through efficient legal aid systems nationwide.
During the ceremony, the Prime Minister will unveil a Community Mediation Training Module developed by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
The initiative empowers communities with conflict resolution skills and reduces the burden on formal courts. PM Modi will also address the gathering to underscore the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to the law.
The conference, organised by NALSA, will deliberate on major issues within the legal aid framework, from counselling and panel lawyers to paralegal volunteers, permanent Lok Adalats, and the financial management of legal services institutions.
Legal experts, judges, and policy officials will explore strategies to strengthen India’s legal aid infrastructure and ensure timely assistance for vulnerable groups.
NALSA’s Role in Legal Empowerment
Established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, NALSA came into force on November 9, 1995, to build a nationwide network offering free and competent legal services to disadvantaged citizens. It formulates policies and monitors implementation across states to ensure equal access to justice.
Each State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) functions under the Chief Justice of the respective High Court as Patron-in-Chief, while the seniormost judge serves as Executive Chairman.
Similarly, District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs), headed by District Judges, operate at the district level to deliver on-ground legal support and organise Lok Adalats.
At the apex level, a Supreme Court Legal Services Committee oversees the execution of legal aid programmes in the top court, ensuring that citizens receive fair representation even at the highest judicial platform.
This national initiative underscores India’s continuing efforts to bridge the gap between justice and accessibility, reaffirming the government’s vision of an inclusive legal ecosystem.
