PM Modi Highlights Birth Of Five Cheetah Cubs At Kuno National Park

The birth of five cheetah cubs at Kuno National Park has taken India’s cheetah population to 60, marking another significant milestone in the country’s ambitious reintroduction programme.

The Prime Minister’s Office announced that an India-born female cheetah gave birth to the five cubs, taking the number of cheetahs born on Indian soil to 41.

The latest births underline the programme’s growing emphasis on natural reproduction rather than relying solely on imported animals to expand the population.

The newborns hold particular significance as they represent the first India-born cheetahs fathered by a male originating from Botswana. Their arrival strengthens Project Cheetah’s objective of nurturing a genetically viable and naturally reproducing population capable of sustaining itself in the country.

India launched Project Cheetah in 2022, bringing cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa after the species remained locally extinct for more than seven decades.

Since then, authorities have closely monitored the animals, their movements, health and breeding patterns across Kuno’s landscape.

The latest litter adds momentum to those conservation efforts while highlighting the challenges involved in establishing a stable wild population.

Newborn cubs face considerable risks during their early months, making continuous monitoring crucial for their survival.

The authorities’ focus now remains on protecting the cubs, supporting natural breeding and ensuring that India’s growing cheetah population can eventually sustain itself without continued dependence on overseas translocations.
