Adani Power, Bhutan’s DGPC To Develop 770 MW Hydropower Project

Adani Power and Bhutan’s state-owned Druk Green Power Corp (DGPC) on Tuesday announced a partnership to develop the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan’s Zhemgang district.

The project marks the second major hydropower collaboration between the two companies, following their agreement for the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project in September 2025.

It is also part of a broader 5,000 MW hydropower development memorandum of understanding signed between the Adani Group and DGPC in May 2025.

Bhutan Prime Minister Lyonchen Dasho Tshering Tobgay attended the signing ceremony, along with senior officials from the Bhutanese government, Druk Holding & Investments, Bhutan Power Corporation, DGPC and Adani Power.

Adani Power Managing Director Anil Sardana said the partnership would strengthen cooperation with Bhutan and support South Asia’s energy transition. He said the project would contribute to energy security, lower carbon intensity and advance shared sustainability goals.

The Chamkharchhu-I project will help meet Bhutan’s peak winter electricity demand and allow the country to export surplus green power to India during the summer months.

Located on the Chamkarchhu River in central Bhutan’s Zhemgang District, the project will follow the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model. Adani Power and DGPC will hold a 49:51 equity partnership, with a 30-year concession beginning from the project’s commercial operation date.

DGPC Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin said the project would boost Bhutan’s winter energy security and enable surplus clean power exports to India.

The 770 MW project will expand Bhutan’s clean energy capacity and regional cooperation. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027, with commissioning targeted six years later.

The project will strengthen the India-Bhutan hydropower partnership and support long-term regional energy security.
