Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm greetings to the nation on World Sanskrit Day, observed this year on August 9, coinciding with the auspicious Shravan Poornima.
In a post on a social media platform, the Prime Minister described Sanskrit as a ‘timeless source of knowledge and expression’ whose influence spans multiple fields.
“Today, on Shravan Poornima, we mark World Sanskrit Day. Sanskrit is a timeless source of knowledge and expression. Its impact can be found across sectors,” PM Modi posted on X.
PM Modi used the occasion to highlight the government’s decade-long commitment to revitalising the Sanskrit language.
Key measures include the establishment of Central Sanskrit Universities and the creation of dedicated Sanskrit Learning Centres. The government also provides grants to scholars and has launched the Gyan Bharatam Mission.
This mission focuses on digitising ancient manuscripts for preservation and wider access.
“This day is an occasion to appreciate the effort of every person around the world who is learning and popularising Sanskrit,” the Prime Minister added.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also highlights the significance of Sanskrit as India’s sacred language and urges everyone to preserve and promote it on World Sanskrit Day.

Honouring Devavani: The Language of the Gods
People celebrate and promote Sanskrit on World Sanskrit Day, known as Vishva Samskrita Dinam. The language is often revered as Devavani, meaning the language of the gods.
Believed to be one of the oldest living languages, Sanskrit has shaped India’s spiritual, philosophical, and literary traditions for millennia.
