
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met local taxpayers, traders and industrial representatives in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, to discuss the effects of the recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate rationalisation.
During the ‘GST Bachat Utsav’ event, he interacted with artisans and shopkeepers selling goods from local produce to packaged foods, emphasising swadeshi products and encouraging consumers to buy from domestic sources.
He handed out placards reading ‘Garv se Kaho Yeh Swadeshi Hai’, which participants said they would display in their shops.
Later, taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Prosperity, growth and empowerment! This interaction from Arunachal Pradesh is a strong reflection of why India is so optimistic about the GST Bachat Utsav. People are backing the reform and the range of opportunities is rising across sectors…”

Foundation Stones for Multi-Crore Projects
Later in the day, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stones for multiple development schemes worth over ₹5,100 crore in Itanagar.
The government launched two major hydropower initiatives worth over ₹3,700 crore, including the 186 MW Tato-I Hydro Electric Project in the Siyom sub-basin.
He also launched several infrastructure projects totalling over ₹1,290 crore covering connectivity, healthcare, fire safety and working women’s hostels.
These initiatives were aimed at spurring economic activity, improving living standards and strengthening links within the region.
PM Modi additionally laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art convention centre at Tawang, situated at an altitude of 9,820 feet in the frontier district.
Designed to host more than 1,500 delegates, the facility will meet international standards, enabling national and global conferences, cultural events and exhibitions.
Officials said the centre would showcase the region’s tourism and cultural potential.
After his engagements in Arunachal Pradesh, the Prime Minister planned to travel to Tripura to perform pooja and inaugurate development works at the Mata Tripura Sundari Temple Complex at Matabari.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the day’s programme reflected his emphasis on ease of doing business and building a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem across India’s North-East.
