PM Modi Congratulates President Lula On Re-Election; Eyes Stronger India-Brazil Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election as Brazil’s President, describing it as a ‘remarkable victory’. He expressed confidence in deepening the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership through closer cooperation.

Lula defeated Liberal Party candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, in Sunday’s presidential runoff.

With 99.89 per cent of votes counted, Lula secured 51.78 per cent of valid votes, against Bolsonaro’s 48.23 per cent, according to the official tally.

Taking to X, PM Modi said, “Heartiest congratulations to my dear friend, President Lula, on his remarkable re-election victory. I look forward to working closely with him to further deepen and expand the multifaceted India-Brazil Strategic Partnership.”

He added that both nations would strengthen cooperation across diverse sectors, advance shared priorities of the Global South and work towards a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable world.

Lula is scheduled to take the oath of office on January 5, 2027, for a four-year term ending in 2030. His priorities include stabilising public debt while navigating a Congress where Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party holds its largest parliamentary representation in decades.

PM Modi and Lula last met in February during the Brazilian President’s state visit to India.

Their discussions covered critical minerals, digital cooperation, traditional knowledge, healthcare, MSMEs, entrepreneurship and mass communication.

Lula attended the second AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. He skipped the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi in September to focus on his re-election campaign.
