PM Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting with top government officials, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval. The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the three service chiefs, General Upendra Dwivedi, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, and Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, were in attendance.
Other key figures included NSA Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Tapan Deka, and Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) Chief Ravi Sinha.
PM Modi’s Meeting Follows India-Pakistan Ceasefire Agreement
The meeting comes two days after India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire agreement.
Pakistan sought the ceasefire after enduring significant airstrikes by the Indian Air Force, which destroyed 11 of its airbases.
The ceasefire is part of efforts to de-escalate tensions, with the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan set to meet to discuss its continuation.
PM Modi Directs Armed Forces To Respond To Cross-Border Attacks
On Sunday, Prime Minister Modi gave clear instructions to the Armed Forces to respond decisively to cross-border firing and shelling during a similar high-level meeting.
The tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after Pakistan-supported terrorists killed 26 tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22.
India retaliated by conducting airstrikes on nine terror bases in Pakistan on May 7, killing more than 100 terrorists.
India’s Retaliation And Pakistan’s Response
In retaliation, the Pakistani Army launched drone and missile attacks on western India, which the Indian armed forces successfully intercepted.
The Indian Air Force struck 11 vital Pakistani airbases during a massive 90-minute operation.
This prompted Pakistan to seek de-escalation. On the advice of the US, India agreed to a ceasefire with Pakistan on Saturday, halting military actions immediately after four days of intense cross-border missile and drone strikes.
De-escalation Brings Calm And Airport Reopenings
Security forces reported no adverse incidents during the night from Sunday to Monday across Jammu and Kashmir and other western border areas following the de-escalation.
In light of the reduced tensions, the authorities decided to reopen 32 airports that had been closed due to the conflict.
These airports had been shut for civil flight operations following the increased security risks.
