On the 79th Independence Day, PM Modi highlighted India’s strides in technological self-reliance, declaring that Made-in-India semiconductor chips will enter markets by the end of 2025.
Speaking under the theme of Naya Bharat, he emphasised that technology defines the 21st century. He added that India must lead globally in critical sectors. These include semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and clean energy.
PM Modi reflected on the country’s historical ambitions, noting that discussions on semiconductor factories began 50–60 years ago, but progress stalled due to bureaucratic delays.
“Today, India is flexing its muscles in semiconductors. We are pushing forward in mission mode,” he said.
The Prime Minister confirmed six semiconductor units are in development, with four nearing completion of the planning stage.
The announcement forms part of the government’s broader Semiconductor Mission. The mission is designed to reduce import dependence and position India as a global chip manufacturing hub.
PM Modi linked this technological drive to the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, asserting that self-reliance in semiconductors will strengthen sectors ranging from defence to digital infrastructure.
“Our next big priority is becoming self-reliant in technology,” he noted, underscoring the strategic significance of indigenous chip production.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the role of domestic technological capabilities in India’s military achievements. He referenced Operation Sindoor as an example of how self-reliance enhances national security. He emphasised that technological independence strengthens India’s ability to act decisively on the global stage.
The Prime Minister praised India’s leadership in fintech innovation. He noted that over 50 per cent of the world’s real-time digital transactions now occur via the UPI system.
He described this achievement as a testament to India’s growing prowess in digital solutions, which are transforming governance and connecting citizens with the state.
PM Modi framed semiconductor production not merely as an economic objective but as a symbol of India’s emergence as a technological powerhouse.
As India celebrates its 79th year of independence, the rollout of domestic chips marks a new chapter in its industrial and digital transformation. This development could potentially reshape the country’s role in the global technology landscape.
The announcement of Made-in-India semiconductor chips reinforces India’s strategic vision of self-reliance, innovation, and leadership in emerging technologies. It signals a bold step towards building a technologically empowered nation by 2047.
