External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday criticised the Opposition for expressing confusion over the term ‘India’s new normal’, and introduced a redefined version, ‘Modi normal’, to highlight the government’s firm approach in combating terrorism and neutralising its masterminds, regardless of their location.
During the Operation Sindoor debate in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar addressed concerns raised by some members. He said the term ‘new normal’ reflects India’s assertive national security stance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Minister drew a clear contrast between ‘Modi normal’ and what he called the ‘Congress normal’.
He explained that the ‘Modi normal’ is guided by core principles:
- Terrorists will not be seen as proxies,
- Cross-border terrorism will be met with firm retaliation,
- Talks cannot happen alongside terror,
- Nuclear threats will not be entertained, and
- Blood and water won’t flow together
Jaishankar noted that this approach became official under the Modi government. He said the armed forces were given full operational freedom during Operation Sindoor.
He stated that any act of terrorism on Indian soil will now be treated as an attack on the nation’s sovereignty. Such acts will be met with the strongest possible military response.
India’s Global Contribution in Fight Against Terrorism
The Minister noted that India’s actions during Operation Sindoor also helped the global fight against terrorism.
“Bahalwapur and Muridke remain the biggest centres of nurturing terrorists and spreading terrorism in India and abroad. Our forces reduced it to dust; they did a global service and are being suitably applauded by all, the Minister noted.
Jaishankar then criticised the Opposition for what he described as deliberate scepticism about the armed forces’ success.
He pointed out that even Pakistan’s leadership acknowledged the impact of India’s strikes.
He said, “Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif admitted that General Munir called him, saying that Indian ballistic missiles hit their Noor Khan air base and missiles like Brahmos targeted their provinces like Rawalpindi.”
The Minister expressed regret that, despite this, some political voices in India continue to cast doubt on the Army’s achievements for political gain.
