The government has constructed or rejuvenated over 68,000 water bodies under Mission Amrit Sarovar, Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Launched in 2022, the mission aimed to develop 50,000 Amrit Sarovars by building or reviving 75 ponds per district. The initiative has exceeded its original target.
Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of Amrit Sarovars with 16,630 ponds. Madhya Pradesh follows with 5,839, Karnataka with 4,056, and Rajasthan with 3,138.
The initiative has helped address water scarcity and improve groundwater levels in several regions.
Paswan highlighted that various government schemes have contributed to the mission.

These include Mahatma Gandhi NREGS, the 15th Finance Commission Grants, and Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayi Yojana. States have also utilized local schemes to support the effort.
The mission allows public contributions through crowdfunding and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Citizens can donate materials or volunteer to support the initiative.
The government plans to launch Phase 2 of Mission Amrit Sarovar with a renewed focus on community participation, climate resilience, and ecological balance.
The next phase aims to enhance water availability and create long-term environmental benefits.
