Mahua Moitra appointed as district president of Krishnanagar amid cash-for-query row

Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra was appointed as the district president of Krishnanagar (Nadia North), in West Bengal, on Monday.

Later, the TMC leader thanked West Bengal Chief Minister and party leader Mamata Banerjee for her appointment on the social media platform X.

Following its investigation into the cash-for-query allegations against her, the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee recommended Moitra’s disqualification from the House, which led to her appointment as the district president of Krishnanagar.

The leader of TMC has denied the accusations describing them as “defamatory, false, baseless, and not supported by even a shred of evidence”.

The committee, led by Chairman Vinod Kumar Sonkar, delivered its report to Speaker Om Birla’s office last Friday regarding the accusations made against Moitra.

Adopted by the Committee with a majority vote, the report charged her of taking “illegal gratifications” to ask questions in Parliament at businessman Darshan Hiranandani’s request.

Moitra responded to the ethics panel’s ruling by stating that it was a “fixed match from the beginning” and that the committee was not authorised to recommend an expulsion. As per Moitra, the chairperson of the ethics panel, put the draft report to vote without any discussion.
