The ongoing Maha Kumbh 2025 has not only reinforced India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage but also delivered a substantial economic impact. According to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), the event has generated over Rs 3 lakh crore ($360 billion USD) in trade, positioning it as one of the country’s largest economic events to date.
CAIT General Secretary and Member of Parliament Praveen Khandelwal highlighted the deep connection between faith and the economy, stressing how the Maha Kumbh exemplifies the role of spiritual tourism and religious gatherings in driving economic growth. He emphasized that the scale of commercial activity during the Maha Kumbh showcases the substantial economic contribution of such events.

Initially, Maha Kumbh 2025, taking place in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26, project to attract 40 crore devotees and generate Rs 2 lakh crore in trade. However, the overwhelming enthusiasm from across the country has pushed the visitor count to an estimated 60 crore, resulting in a revised trade impact exceeding Rs 3 lakh crore.

This surge in economic activity has not been confined to Prayagraj alone. Cities and towns within a 150 km radius have experienced a rise in business activity, while religious hubs like Ayodhya and Varanasi have also seen an influx of pilgrims, further boosting local economies.
In preparation for the event, the Uttar Pradesh government invested Rs 7,500 crore in enhancing infrastructure, including the development of roads, flyovers, and underpasses in Prayagraj. The government specifically allocated Rs 1,500 crore for Maha Kumbh preparations, improving infrastructure and traffic management in the city. These improvements have not only benefited Prayagraj but have also contributed to the economic upliftment of neighboring areas.
