Rekha Gupta Named Delhi’s Chief Minister As BJP Finalizes Leadership

In a key development on Wednesday evening, the BJP announced that Rekha Gupta will be the Chief Minister of Delhi, following a proposal by the RSS, which was accepted by the party. Pravesh Verma will serve as the Deputy Chief Minister. The decision was made public during a BJP Legislature Party meeting in Delhi.

The party’s central observers, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Om Prakash Dhankhar, met with the newly elected MLAs individually before officially announcing Gupta’s name as the Chief Minister. Additionally, officials have appointed Vijendra Gupta as the Assembly Speaker.

The BJP Legislature Party will likely reveal the Chief Minister’s name during its meeting, held 11 days after officials announced the assembly election results.

Oath-Taking Ceremony Scheduled For Thursday

The oath-taking ceremony for the newly appointed Chief Minister will held at 12:35 pm on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Ramlila Maidan. The invitation from the Chief Secretary of Delhi also mentions that the oath of ministers will take place alongside the Chief Minister.

Around 30,000 guests, including BJP leaders, workers from other states, and those involved in the Delhi Assembly elections, will likely attend the event.

BJP’s Strategy For Cabinet Selection

Sources suggest that the BJP could form a cabinet representing a combination of Dalit, Purvanchal, and Jat communities, with the possibility of appointing two Deputy Chief Ministers. BJP President JP Nadda had already clarified that the Chief Minister would selected from among the elected MLAs. The names of cabinet ministers will likely announced during the meeting.

Top Political Figures To Attend The Ceremony

The oath-taking ceremony will see attendance from prominent figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states, Union Ministers, and other NDA leaders. A cultural programme featuring music and songs will precede the ceremony.

AAP Criticizes BJP Over Delay In CM Selection

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) intensified its criticism of the BJP, accusing the party of struggling to select a Chief Minister. AAP leader Gopal Rai questioned the BJP’s decision-making process, suggesting that Delhi could see multiple Chief Ministers in the next five years, as the BJP has failed to finalize a name even 10 days after the election results.

The political drama continues to unfold as the BJP prepares to formally swear in its new leadership in Delhi, amid increasing scrutiny from opposition parties.
