Lok Sabha Polls 2024: Night Patrols, Flag Marches Conducted At Several Places In Delhi After CAA Implementation

Following the central government’s notification of the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 rules on Monday, in advance of the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, paramilitary soldiers carried out flag marches and night patrols in multiple locations throughout Delhi, according to news agency PTI.

Northeastern Delhi and other areas of the national capital, such as Shaheen Bagh and Jamia Millia Islamia, which served as the epicenters of the anti-CAA rallies in 2019 and 2020, were heavily guarded.

Across the nation, large-scale protests against the CAA were held after the bill was passed in Parliament on December 11, 2019. These demonstrations persisted until March 2020, when the Covid-19 lockdown caused them to end.

Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis who arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014, from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, are eligible to apply for citizenship under the CAA.

The issue sparked communal rioting in northeast Delhi at the beginning of 2020, which resulted in over 500 injuries and 53 fatalities.

The police selected 43 hotspots in northeast Delhi and carried out patrols there after the Center implemented the CAA on Monday, announcing the rules four years after the controversial law was passed.

According to an official, these regions include Seelampur, Jaffrabad, Mustafabad, Bhajanpura, Khajoori Khas, and Seemapuri.

As per news agency PTI, “Police and paramilitary personnel are keeping a strict vigil to maintain law and order. We have identified 43 hotspots in northeast Delhi and night patrolling was comparatively high at these locations.”
