In the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, voting was conducted today in 58 constituencies, including the 7 pivotal seats of the national capital, Delhi. Crores of citizens participated in this democratic exercise, showcasing the vibrancy of India’s electoral process. Among the millions who cast their votes, 1.82 crore were first-time voters, injecting fresh enthusiasm and energy into the democratic fabric.
One notable first-time voter was Oorja Akshara, daughter of Upendrra Rai, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Bharat Express News Network. Oorja, representing the new generation of voters, arrived at her polling station early, ready to fulfil her civic duty. She expressed her excitement and nervousness as she prepared to vote for the first time.
The First-Time Voting Experience
After casting her vote, Oorja proudly displayed her ‘First Time Voter’ certificate, a token given by the Election Commission to commemorate the occasion. She emphasized the importance of voting, urging her peers to participate actively in the democratic process. “Every vote counts,” she said. “There is a spirit of democracy, and I urge every person who is 18 years old to go vote for the country.”
Oorja noted the absence of her age group at the polling booth, which was predominantly occupied by senior citizens and middle-aged voters. She expressed her disappointment at not seeing more young voters, emphasizing that the youth are the future of the country. “If the youth do not come out to vote, it will not be right. We should definitely vote,” she urged.

Addressing Youth Concerns
When asked about the core issues for young voters, Oorja highlighted several key areas. She stressed the importance of female representation, women’s reservation, and feminism in political parties. “If any party lacks these three, then it does not belong to my thinking,” she stated firmly. Additionally, she pointed to the need for child rights and equality for all castes as crucial considerations in her voting decision.
Oorja also touched upon the influence of social media, advocating for its responsible use. “I think social media is a major issue for the youth in the world at this time. Its use should be limited and it should be used for good publicity, not for negative things.”
Vision for the Future Government
Reflecting on her hopes for the new government, Oorja expressed her desire for a representative who brings glory to the country on the global stage. She emphasized the need for political and domestic equality and called for an upgraded education system that keeps pace with the changing world. “Schools should be improved a little more, and there should definitely be policies for the poor. Infrastructure should be built up for those living in slums,” she said.
A Call to Action for Youth
Oorja’s experience and insights underscore the critical role of youth in shaping the future of the country. She called on her peers to vote, emphasizing that the youth are the decision-makers and the future of the nation. “Everyone must vote. This is the time to take decisions, and we (youth) are the future of the country.”
