Kota Student Commits Suicide, Already Told Friends He Is ‘Next In Line’; Writes Note Wishing Father ‘Happy Birthday’

Manjot Singh, 18, informed friends that he would be “next in line” if they discussed about student’s suicides in Kota, Rajasthan. The medical school committed suicide on Thursday. Manjot left his father a note wishing him happy birthday. In another note, the teen apologized and stated that no one should be held accountable for the extreme step he has taken.

“Whatever I Have Done is of my own will. So please do not trouble my parents and friends,” one of the notes read. The other note said, “Happy Birthday Papa”.

According to Manjot’s friends he was a brilliant student and was of jolly nature. He scored 93% marks in his board exams and was also performing well in regular test taken up by the coaching institute, Police official Dharmveer Singh told PTI.

Manjot Singh hailed from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh and was preparing for medical entrance exams. He came to Kota in April and took admissions in one of the coaching institutes to prepare for NEET.

As per PTI, the student came to Kota along with his three mates from school, who were also from his school hostel. Authorities found the child’s body hanging to a ceiling fan, while hands tied at back in his hostel room on Thursday morning. Soon after which the police was called. The officials straight away did not take the body to mortuary but waited for the family members to reach the place. However, the reason behind the suicide is yet to be known.

Including Manjot’s case around 19 students have committed suicide this year in Kota so far. Nearly 15 cases were registered by police regarding students committing suicide in Kota last year. Because of the risinig suicide case in Kota the coaching Institues will be using springs known as “anti-suicide devices” that will be attatched on all the fans which will the fans down if any heavy weight is tied to it.

Psychologist Ritu Sharma told Bharat Express in an exclusive interview regarding the increase in student suicide in Kota this year that Indian Children are nurtured till a later age, compared to kids of other countries who become independent at an early age. In India children are completely dependent on their parents and mostly take no decisions of their own, hence the child is not able to see beyond what is shown.

She further added, “Children want emotional support, in Indian society, adults of age 25 to 30 stay with their parents and take advice in decision making, meanwhile these teenagers who are sent away from family for higher studies lack emotional support which they need and hence end up getting into relationships soon. But if the relationship does not work then trauma caused by it multiplies and becomes one of the major reasons for taking such drastic steps as committing suicide. The second reason is the competitive mindset that children have regarding success and failure. They know and are trained about not making any friends in coaching institute and seeing every student as a competition. Hence the pressure, no loyal friendships, distance with parents, lack of communication and emotional support prompts the child to take extreme steps in the heat of moment.”
